Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
Kilimanjaro International Airport, covering close to 110 sq. km was officially inaugurated in December 1971 and was designed “The gateway to the Africa’s wildlife Heritage”. The airport became the first international airport to be privatised in Africa in 1998 and is now operated by Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO), a consortium comprised of UK-based management, engineering and development Company Mott Mc Donald International, a South African Infrastructure Fund, the Government Tanzania and Inter Consult Ltd., a Tanzanian engineering firm. The airport is strategically situated between two regions of Kilimanjaro and Arusha in northern Tanzania. Arusha and Kilimanjaro are ideal regions for tourism, investment opportunities and business activities due to their economic potentialities and unique tourist attractions. The regions are popularly known as East Africa’s best tourist destinations or commonly known as the northern tourism circuit with a combined population over three million people.
Another local speciality in the region is the precious gemstone Tanzanite, found only in the Mererani hills, near the airport which is very much in demand because of its multi-coloured appearance. Tanzanite export revenues could be boosted significantly by the development of more local processing facilities. Most Tanzanite currently undergoes value-adding cutting processes abroad. The Arusha-Moshi area is a production centre for horticulture and floriculture in Tanzania creating demand for cargo flights to Europe, Middle East and Far East. Climatic conditions of this region is tropical and the land is very fertile which fevers high value crop cultivation and animal husbandry. Coffee, banana, maize, beans and vegetables are also widely grown in the region.
